Israel has cut off humanitarian supplies to Gaza in an effort to pressure Hamas into accepting a change in the ceasefire agreement to allow for the release of hostages without an Israeli troop withdrawal. The office of the prime minister, Benjamin Netanyahu, said on Sunday it was imposing a blockade on Gaza because Hamas would not accept a plan which it claimed had been put forward by the US special envoy, Steve Witkoff, to extend phase one of the ceasefire and continue to release hostages, and postpone phase two, which envisaged an Israeli withdrawal from the Gaza Strip. “With the end of phase one of the hostage deal, and in light of Hamas’s refusal to accept the Witkoff outline for continuing talks – to which Israel agreed – Prime Minister Netanyahu has decided that, as of this morning, all entry of goods and supplies into the Gaza Strip will cease. Israel will not allow a ceasefire without the release of our hostages,” it said in a statement. “If Hamas continues its refusal, there will be further consequences.” After the announcement, Netanyahu’s spokesperson, Omer Dostri, wrote in a social media post: “No trucks entered Gaza this morning, nor will they at this stage.” The UN secretary general, António Guterres, on Sunday called for “humanitarian aid to flow back into Gaza immediately”. The existence and details of a Witkoff plan had not been confirmed by Washington by Sunday morning. A statement from Hamas called the suspension of aid a “war crime” and a violation of the ceasefire agreement. It said Netanyahu’s “decision to suspend humanitarian aid is cheap blackmail, a war crime and a blatant coup against the [ceasefire] agreement”. Hamas said it was committed to the originally agreed ceasefire that had been scheduled to move into a second phase, with negotiations aimed at a permanent end to the war, and it rejected the idea of a temporary extension to the 42-day truce. A senior Hamas official, Mahmoud Mardawi, told Al Jazeera the group would release the remaining Israeli hostages only under the terms of the already agreed-upon phased deal. During the 15 months of the Israel-Gaza war, the Netanyahu government repeatedly denied claims from aid agencies that it was blocking humanitarian deliveries, blaming the very limited flow on other factors. Before the ceasefire, UN officials had warned that widespread famine was imminent. In the six weeks of the first phase of the truce, deliveries returned to the prewar levels of about 600 trucks a day, mostly carrying food.

[...] Israeli political analysts have suggested that Netanyahu agreed to the ceasefire under pressure from Donald Trump, confident that the agreement would never reach a second phase. Since the start of the ceasefire, he prevented Israeli negotiators from discussing a second phase. Witkoff has, however, insisted that a second phase of the ceasefire deal should be implemented, to ensure the release of the remaining 59 hostages, only 25 of whom are thought to be still alive. Most Israelis also want the government to make a priority of freeing the hostages, but that position is opposed by the Israeli far right, without whom the coalition could not stay in power. The rightwing parties argue Israel’s priority should be the destruction of Hamas. The far-right Israeli finance minister, Bezalel Smotrich, said the decision to halt the flow of aid was “an important step in the right direction”. Referring to Trump’s earlier threat to open the “gates of hell” on Gaza, Smotrich said in a social media post: “Now we need to open these gates as quickly and deadly as possible on to the enemy, until complete victory.”

This is just cruel and inhumane by Israel Apartheid State to cut off humanitarian supplies to Gaza.

In the days leading to the election, the BJP’s main slogan had been Abki baar, 400 Paar, a call to voters to send more than 400 of its candidates to the 543-member parliament. This slogan, voiced by Modi at his campaign rallies, set a high bar for the party. Most exit polls had predicted a massive victory for the BJP – and now the results, with that party having won only 240 seats, suggest that the electorate has sent a chastening message to the ruling party and trimmed its hubris. Local newspapers carried government ads exhorting voters to exercise their franchise, as well as half-page ads from the health ministry offering advice about how to avoid heatstroke. In the days leading to the voting in Patna, there were reports of personnel at polling stations dying from the heat. In the nation’s capital, Delhi, there were protests over water shortages. Last week, the temperature in Delhi hit 49.9C.

For the Celsius-challenged, 49.9° C = 121.8° F. That's just 0.2° F short of the all time record high temperature in Phoenix, Arizona which reputedly has "dry" heat.

As it turned out the ruling BJP did win the election but will be able to govern only with the help of electoral allies. The BJP had been boasting about getting 400 seats in the 543 seat Lok Sabha - the lower house of parliament. It ended up with just 240 with its allies winning 53 for a total of 293 seats. It is a modest working majority but is way down from the 353 seats won by the BJP & allies in the previous election.

Climate was certainly not the only issue in the election but experiencing a severe heat wave in which people were dropping dead at polling places is bound to have an impact. Politicians in India may now be more open to moving away from fossil fuels. The opposition would be wise to make climate change a bigger issue.

Tenemos que comprar productos de limpieza ecológicos, poner un aislante en nuestras casas, cambiar nuestras calderas y tener un pozo canadiense, comprar menos plástico, clasificar nuestra basura, conducir coches ecológicos, limitar nuestra velocidad en las carreteras, limitar nuestro consumo de agua cuando nos duchamos o tiramos de la cadena, limitar el consumo de concreto, tener un montón de compost en el jardín, limitar el consumo de carne, utilizar jabón de Alepo y limitar el consumo de cremas solares, utilizar un horno solar, invertir en energía ecológica (turbinas eólicas, paneles fotovoltaicos, centrales hidroeléctricas), comprar bienes de segunda mano. Los precios de la electricidad, el petróleo y los alimentos se disparan con el pretexto de la ecología.

Minería, extracción de litio, residuos de centrales nucleares, grandes fábricas, construcción, petróleo, agricultura intensiva (contaminación del suelo, consumo exorbitante de agua), etc. Las multinacionales contaminan mucho más que los individuos y no están sujetas a ninguna medida ecológica para limitar esta contaminación. Los más ricos, con las multinacionales en particular, son responsables de los mayores ecocidios del mundo: destruyen los bosques, incluida la selva amazónica, contaminan los ríos, destruyen los fondos marinos, imponen a los agricultores condiciones tales que destruyen la tierra, que corre el riesgo de volverse estéril a causa del uso de productos químicos, y maltratan a los animales. Tenemos que ayudar a los países en desarrollo a desarrollarse de un modo saludable para la humanidad.

Esto es difícil. No se trata de enviar dinero, porque la experiencia demuestra que el dinero se desviaría a gente corrupta. Hace falta gente sobre el terreno para comprobar que se hace el trabajo ecológico. Hay que educar a la gente en ecología y darle los medios para que ponga en vigor medidas ecológicas. Para que los países en desarrollo se conviertan en países con bajas emisiones, como los europeos, harían falta 2.400 billones de dólares al año. En la actualidad, las subvenciones a los combustibles fósiles ascienden a 5 billones de dólares anuales. Cambiar a las energías renovables costaría la mitad que mantener los combustibles fósiles. António Guterres criticó el uso de subvenciones en mayo de 2024: “Lo que estamos haciendo es utilizar el dinero de los contribuyentes -nuestro dinero- para fomentar los huracanes, prolongar las sequías, derretir los glaciares, blanquear los corales. El secretario general de Naciones Unidas, el portugués António Guterres, urgió a que las potencias mundiales demuestren un mayor compromiso en la lucha contra el cambio climático y se deje de jugar a “la ruleta rusa con el planeta”. Además, comparó a la humanidad con el meteorito que acabó con los dinosaurios. “Estamos jugando a la ruleta rusa con nuestro planeta. Todo (el futuro) depende de las decisiones que tomen o dejen de tomar los líderes actuales, especialmente en los próximos 18 meses. Es la hora de la verdad”, afirmó Guterres, en el marco del Día Mundial del Medioambiente. De hecho, el secretario general adelantó las cifras entregadas más tarde por la Organización Meteorológica Mundial (OMM) respecto al aumento de la temperatura, y apuntó que el Acuerdo de París “pende de un hilo”. Miles de científicos y expertos coincidieron en el Acuerdo de París (2015) que limitar el aumento de la temperatura promedio global a no más de 1,5 grados Celsius en comparación con la era preindustrial ayudaría a evitar las peores consecuencias ambientales. Por ello, Guterres enfatizó que es importante trabajar en disminuir las emisiones “del 1 por ciento más rico que emite la misma cantidad de carbono que dos tercios de la humanidad”. Para Guterres, los países del G20 “tienen la responsabilidad” y “deben ir más lejos” -ya que producen el 80 por ciento de las emisiones- comprometiéndose a reasignar subvenciones de combustibles fósiles a energías renovables y a acabar con el carbón para 2030. “No podemos aceptar un futuro en el que los ricos estén protegidos en burbujas con aire acondicionado, mientras el resto de la humanidad es azotada por un clima letal en tierras no habitables”, sentenció. Además, comparó la “situación de urgencia actual” y su “desproporcionado efecto” para el futuro cercano con “el meteorito que acabó con los dinosaurios”. “En el caso del clima, no somos los dinosaurios, somos el meteorito. No solo estamos en peligro, somos el peligro. Pero también somos la solución”, sostuvo Guterres, dejando un resquicio para la esperanza, para lo cual es vital “mantener vigente el umbral de los 1,5 grados” y que las emisiones mundiales disminuyan un 9 por ciento cada año hasta 2030. Las declaraciones de Guterres se conocen el mismo día en que el observatorio europeo del clima, Copernicus, informó que mayo de 2024 fue el más caluroso registrado hasta la fecha, lo que significa que el mundo lleva un año batiendo récords mensuales. Die Preise für Strom, Öl und Lebensmittel steigen unter dem Vorwand der Ökologie in die Höhe.

Minen, Lithiumabbau, Abfälle aus Kernkraftwerken, große Fabriken, Baugewerbe, Öl, intensive Landwirtschaft (Bodenverschmutzung, exorbitanter Wasserverbrauch) usw. Multinationale Konzerne verschmutzen die Umwelt weitaus mehr als Privatpersonen und werden nicht mit ökologischen Maßnahmen zur Begrenzung dieser Verschmutzung konfrontiert. Die reichsten Menschen, insbesondere die multinationalen Konzerne, sind für die größten Ökozide der Welt verantwortlich: Sie zerstören Wälder wie den Amazonas-Regenwald, verschmutzen Flüsse, zerstören den Meeresboden, zwingen den Landwirten Bedingungen auf, die dazu führen, dass sie das Land zerstören, das durch den Einsatz von Chemikalien unfruchtbar werden kann, und misshandeln Tiere.
